Georgia Film News

Watch for the Denzel Washington sightings to begin at the end of September and early October as Paramount Pictures brings production for the film Flight to Georgia. Like his 2010 film Unstoppable, Washington will again be faced with reigning in an out of control vehicle. This time instead of a train it will be a plane. The film is being directed by Robert Zemeckis (the Back to the Future trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Cast Away). The film is slated for a 2012 release.
The family friendly film Us and Them, starring Billy Crystal, will be filming in Georgia from September 26th through November 18th. According to Deadline.com, the SNL alumnus and former Oscar host will reunite with writers Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, who are rewriting a script by Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse, for the project.  Crystal, Mandel and Ganz previously worked together on the two City Slicker films, Father's Day and Forget Paris. Deadline says that Crystal plays a grandpa left alone to care for his grandchildren. He has to navigate to overcome generational shifts to bond with the kids, and try to repair a rift with his daughter.
Jonah Hill and Rosemarie DeWitt have been cast alongside Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller in the sci-fi/comedy Neighborhood Watch that is also slated to begin filming in Georgia on September 26th. The film, with a script by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and story by Jared Stern, is about a bunch of dads who form a watch group that serves as a front for male-bonding time away for their families but ends up discovering an alien plot. Rogen and Goldberg have teamed as writers previously on The Green Hornet, Pineapple Express and Superbad. Dewitt was in Georgia earlier this year filming The Odd Life of Timothy Green which is currently slated for release next August.
What to Expect When You're Expecting has been shooting at various locations around town including the Woodruff Arts Center, Smith's Old Bar, Inman Park, Little Five Points, Piedmont Park, the Fulton County Airport at Charlie Brown Field, and near the Georgia World Congress Center. The film is slated to wrap shooting on September 16th. Meanwhile, South City Kitchen in Midtown has become a favorite of the film's stars. Cameron Diaz ate there twice in one day, while her co-star Chris Rock also dined there recently.
Jayne Mansfield's Car wrapped last month after shooting in Cedartown, LaGrange, Inman Park and Oakhurst but not before director Billy Bob Thornton wrangled Georgia tree farmer, author, conservationist and Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell into a cameo in the film. Watch for Leavell in a barber shop and a street party scene.
American Reunion also finished up here in August.
The indie horror film Altered spent a few days in August shooting around Georgia before heading to Chicago.
Contagion, part of which was shot at the CDC in Atlanta, opens in theaters on September 9th. The action-thriller, starring, Matt Damon, Kate Winslett, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, centers on a group of international doctors trying to stop the spread of a killer disease.
A Cross to Bear, a film produced by NinaHoliday Entertainment for GMT Networks (Gospel Music Television) spent time shooting in Atlanta in August. The flick focuses on Erica Moses (Danielle Deadwyler) and her battle to overcome the pain and guilt of her past. Kim Fields (TV's Living Single, Facts of Life) and Malinda Williams (Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls) also star. The film is slated to air next February.
Do you want your TTV? According to The New York Times, Lionsgate (the movie studio company responsible for distributing Tyler Perry's films) and the media mogul are forming a venture called Tyler TV. According to a report on the newspaper's website, "The partners will initially stock the channel with reruns of Mr. Perry's sitcoms and movies...They also plan to buy third-party content that meshes with Mr. Perry's Christianity-tinged brand."  If it happens the hope is it will bring even more TV and movie work to Georgia.
On October 4th, Anchor Bay will release three editions of The Walking Dead's first season – a special edition Blu-Ray, a special edition DVD and a Limited Edition Collector's Tin (Blu-Ray only). Each are loaded with the usual commentaries, behind the scenes and "the making of..." type footage. One of the more interesting looking features which will appear on all three editions is a black and white version of the pilot. And if that is not enough of the Walking Dead for you, Cryptozoic Entertainment will be releasing The Walking Dead board game in September
